One Teen Boy's Room {Part 1}

At the beginning of the year I posted about several rooms in my house that SEVERELY need some help.
One of those rooms is my Big Guy's room. He is 13 and has been ready to have his own space for quite some time now. Up until a month ago, he was rooming with the little guy-who is 8.
Yeah. I know. Time to cut the cord, little one. The little guy has NOT been thrilled that big brother will be having his own room. He loves his big brother so much (it's actually very sweet) that he wants to be around him ALL THE FREAKIN' TIME! The feeling is not always mutual though, so the big guy was ANXIOUS to move out.

First I needed to find some paint for his room. When we first moved into this house this room had clouds on the ceiling and a picket fence wallpaper around the room. Yeah, GROSS.
So after we removed the hideous wallpaper and blue sky, we painted it a nice neutral beige because this used to be my mom's room.
BUTTTTT now my task is to transform this into the ULTIMATE TEEN BOY'S ROOM!!
My quest is to make it modern on the cheap.

First stop-IKEA. I had my eye on this bed for quite some time.

{You can find it here.}

But when we went by they only had it in the Queen size. What are ya gonna do right? So I bought the Queen bed. And mattress.And comforter. So I spent a little bit more than I had budgeted but I figure when we have guests over guess where they can sleep?? {Shhhhh...don't tell HIM that!}
So we picked out a really nice neutral gray. Well actually my hubster picked it out. Well actually after getting into an argument with him over color (something about me not letting him decorate ANY room, whatever, he has his GARAGE), we both picked it out OK!!

After setting it up and admiring it-it really is nice for the price :)-I wondered what can I do to add some color.
I know he loves orange. He loves that color. And I am glad it's such a happy color and by golly it's IN right now! Anywho, I racked my brain to incorporate some colorful accessories and.....ART! Yes, Art. He took some art classes from this really cool local artist and I remembered he made a painting that had orange in it. It's actually a very nice piece he painted in the 4th grade. So I grabbed it and took it down to the Hobby Lobby to get it framed. And luck o' the Irish! They were having a 50% off sale on custom framing.
SCOOOORRRE! The girl behind the counter said that they actually had some open back frames in stock and she could frame it with that. I told her I wanted a very simple (read cheap) frame to go with it.
We found a simple black wooden frame and after a few minutes it was done. Cost >>>$20 buckaroos.
Not bad for a custom piece of art, huh? So here it is hanging above the bed.

Today while I was perusing the Target online ad I came across this:

and I immediately went to go get it. It was $12 and I just could NOT pass that up. Now I just need a snazzy new lamp to put on top of it. (stay tuned for a tutorial on a Goodwill find hee hee )

Next piece of furniture I want to get is this:

3 Drawer Dresser

But I need to save the moolah to go get it. I figure in another month or so. For now he still keeps his clothes over in his brother's dresser.And he doesn't mind a bit.

I think I may have found the perfect curtains for his room but at $29 per panel they're a little too rich for my blood KWIM?

So I may have to mosey on down to the fabric store and see what they have this weekend.
In the meantime, I'm wondering whether to get him a cool new shaggy rug or just one with some funky modern pattern on it? What do you think?
It's slowly coming together, but it's coming.
Here it is Before:

And After:

I'll put up some updates on this room as we go along.
