Valentine's Day Ideas and Home School Progress

Good start to the week everyone!
I had a great week, busy, busy and as I mentioned before
still trying to get my energy back after all that sickness in December.
The little guy and I are busy with his home schooling and I can't believe we are halfway through the year.
It has been a great experience for all of our family. He is doing MUCH better being home schooled.
He is better able to focus on his work and he can work at his own pace.
Some of you have asked what curriculum we use and I have to say that this is our first year home schooling and we decided on one put by the State of Texas called
Texas Connections Academy. It is self paced and entirely online!
So fun and easy to follow along. Your child gets to interact with a real teacher via "live lessons" on the web.
They ship out all the necessary supplies and books that you and your child will need for the year.
I am very impressed so far.
He does have to take the state required exams this next Spring so we'll see how he does. If all goes well, we will sign up for next year as well.
The cool part of this program is that when he is in high school he can start taking college credit classes online!
So he'll be able to take some advanced classes just like the brick and mortar school.
Again, we are playing it by ear to see if he is still enjoying his schooling in the future as much as he is now.
A lot of changes are coming to our family with the next few months.
I can't wait to tell you all about it but I've been told to keep a lid on it HA!
Here is the info on the school:

In the meantime I'll leave you with a few pins on home schooling I have found:
Kiwi Crate - They will deliver a box to your child each month that’s designed around a certain theme (think Dinosaurs, Garden, Superheroes, Space.) In each box are 2-3 carefully designed and kid-tested projects, which cover a range of developmental areas and subjects, including art, science, and imaginative play. All the materials and inspiration to encourage creativity and curiosity are included – you just supply the kids!

  1. My husband and I want to home school. Our son is due in early March. What would you say are some of the difficulties that you have faced and how have you over come them?

  2. Hi Aleta:
Since my son attended public school it was a little difficult for him not to have that daily peer to peer interaction as he is very social.
But we have joined a local home schooling group and they are very active in getting together frequently so that the kids can socialize.
I don't think you have to worry about the social aspect anymore because of the availability of these types of groups.
We did have some difficulty in trying to decide which curriculum was best for him. We narrowed it down to ABECA and Texas Connections Academy. Since he is very computer literate, as most kids are, we decided on TCA. That and it is free. I have heard so many good things about the ABECA curriculum that if we decide not to return to TCA, that is the curriculum we will use.
In Texas, home schools are regarded as private schools so we can pretty much make up our own curriculum. My thing is that I wanted to make sure he was meeting all the grade requirements in case he ever goes back to public school. By him being home schooled, we have seen him flourish and become a more independent kid. I think home schooling is the way to go.
By the way, congrats on the new addition. :)
    Regards,
    Patty
