DIY Home Hair Highlighting Kits-Do They Work?

I've been wanting to have a hair style change for 

a loooong time now. 

Finally a week ago Friday, I just did it.

I went into my stylist's and asked her to give 

me......bangs :)

I love it! She also layered my hair in long layers to keep my length. And since I was on a roll, I thought why not color my hair too, right?

So I waltzed into my local Walgreen's and 

bought a home hair highlighting kit.

I've colored my hair before plenty of times, but I've never highlighted it. 

I wanted to be your guinea pig so here it goes:

These two pictures are the "before" color and highlights. I wanted to show you here the color of my hair. 

I used L'oreal Paris Couleur Expert Brioche

You begin the process by coloring your hair with the correct numbered bottle. The instructions are easy to follow. The color after I rinsed and blow dried looked like this:

You can see in this picture above that the color is a nice subtle change. I really liked the color. Now onto the second step: Highlights

I was pretty scared I was going to mess up. I've never done this before and the kit came with two tools. One was a thing you slip over your finger and you're supposed to apply it with that or a mascara wand. I opted for the wand. 

I just sectioned off strands and ran the wand down each strand. The color of the tint is blue, which helps identify which strands you've already done. I suggest you do this with another person to help get at the back of your hair. I couldn't see nor reach the back and who knows how it turned out!

All in all, it took me one hour from start to finish. This includes the washing and blow drying of the hair both times.

Can you see the difference? The highlights came off looking to coppery. I really didn't like it and if I do this again, I'll leave it on for less time. I also did not run the wand down the length like I should have and the highlights look choppy. Oh well. They'll fade over time. Here are some extra views:
