Trash to Treasure - Chalk Paint-1940s Dresser

It seems like I haven't been on here in foreva!
But I have a good excuse :)
You see I've been feverishly planning (and then executing) our 25th Wedding Anniversary!
Yep. Celebrated the big 2-5
I'll post pics and deets on my next blog post.
But for today I want to show you some thing that I refinished especially for the event:
A 1940s dresser
As you can see the finish was in pretty rough shape. I do love the hardware and the slight curve of the top two drawers. I removed the very heavy mirror and put it away. I still don't know what I'm going to do with it but I'm sure I'll come up with something  ;)
This dresser lived in my daughter's room for many years. She never did like it though so I told her I wanted it back so I could refinish it. Needless to say she doesn't feel the same way about this dresser any more :)
I made my own chalk paint out of Behr's Beluga paint. A nice warm satin black. I simply mixed two cups of paint to two tablespoons of unsanded tile grout. Now, I have to tell you that the real chalk paint from Annie Sloan has NO odor but if you make your own out of this recipe it does have a slight odor. I plan on making my next batch of chalk paint with plaster of paris to see if the odor is there.
It didn't take me long to paint as you have to do almost no prep work at all. I simply took a damp rag and wiped it clean :)
 Ta da!
I took pics before I gave it a good waxing (hence he smudges). I haven't yet broken down and gotten Annie Sloan's wax but I will. I really liked this wax too. It's called Howard Citrus Shield Premium Paste Wax in Walnut. It's a nice dark color with a pleasant citrus smell.

I then spray painted the original hardware in Chrome.
What do you think? My daughter now loves it. I don't know if I'll be selling it or keeping it yet. It's wonderful storage and looks great in my dining room. It also looked great at our 25th Wedding Anniversary party holding our cake :)
I gotta tell you I'm really hooked on refinishing old furniture with chalk paint. I have another beautiful dresser I got recently that I have grand ideas for :)
Stay tuned.
Oh, almost forgot. My December giveaway is coming up soon.
Happy Thanksgiving!!
Patty

EZ Chocolate Brittle Dessert and Kohl's Winner

I know I keep saying this but time sure is flying fast! Here we are in November already and we are still having temps in the 80s here in North Texas. I realllllyy want it to be cooler.
A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that we had our annual Super Saturday crafting day at my church.
Amongst the awesome crafty classes was this yummy class on making desserts.
This was one of the recipes that was demoed.
I loved it!
I immediately came home and made some of my own.
You most likely have all the ingredients:
1 sleeve Saltine crackers
1 small bag chocolate chips
1 cup real butter
1 cup sugar

That's it!
Sounds simple but it's so yummy!
Make this tonight:

         {Yummy Chocolate Brittle}

Here's what you do:
Preheat oven to 375
Line cookie sheet with foil or parchment paper
place crackers side by side on sheet
In a sauce pan, melt butter. Add sugar and bring to a boil on med/high heat. Boil for about 3 minutes and stir constantly.

Pour sugar/butter mixture over crackers  and spread evenly with a pastry brush. Bake in over for about 6 minutes.

As soon as crackers come out, sprinkle chocolate chips oven them and watch them melt. Spread all over crackers.
If you need to melt them more, stick them in the oven for a minute or two. Let cool then refrigerate for about an hour.
Break into pieces and enjoy something sweet :)

 Mmmmm

Enjoy your weekend.

xoxo
Patty
